NUMBER BONDS!!!!!!!!!

Boys let’s have ago at learning our number bonds from 1-10. Get mum and dad, sisters and brothers and friends to play games with you to see how many you can learn, so that you can think of them quickly in your head.

This means learning the partners that make each of these numbers like

       2

0 + 2 = 2

1 + 1 = 2

2 + 0 = 2

      3

0 + 3 = 3

1 + 2 = 3

2 + 1 = 3

3 + 0 = 3

      4

0 + 4 = 4

1 + 3 = 4

2 + 2 = 4

3 + 1 = 4

4 + 0 = 4

      5

0 + 5 = 5

1 + 4 = 5

2 + 3 = 5

3 + 2 = 5

4 + 1 = 5

5 + 0 = 5

Here are some fun ways to do this

  • play dominoes but instead of matching the same number, decide on a number and then match the dominoes to make that number. With dominoes you can do number bonds to 10,
  • play snap with 2 piles of cards, the top cards on each pile must add up to your chosen number for the game. Remember if your chosen number is 6 then only use ace to 6 in each suit. If you want to extend to number bonds up to 20 then use picture cards as tens as well.

So boys let’s see how many you can learn by Christmas!

YEAR 1 TOPIC PROJECT FOR NEXT HALF TERM

TOYS OLD AND NEW………………………………………….Next half term we will be looking at new and old toys.

If the boys are able to bring in any toys from their parents or grandparents

childhoods to share that would be great.

You may want to visit some toy museums:

· Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green (part of V & A museum)

· The Toy Museum on the Hill, Stansted Abbott.

As part of their homework for our topic the boys can choose something they

would like to share about toys.

They can:

write, draw, make, investigate on the internet or via books, and/or make a

photo album.

We will ask them to share their work with us before the end of term (date to

be announced) and encourage them to share what they have learnt with all

the other boys.

Do you have a favourite toy or a special toy you sleep with? Do you have any toys that belonged to your mum and dad or even your

grandparents?

Remember we would like to see them in school.

We are hoping to have our own Toy Museum in our classes.

The local Community Support Officer visits Year 1

On Wednesday afternoon Year 1 had a visit from Carl who is a local police community support officer. He told the boys all about the job and the role they play in our community.

The boys listened beautifully and asked some really good questions. They were intrigued as to what prison was like!

The boys gained a lot of knowledge from the visit. Ask your son what he learnt and remembers!

Our Local Area

On Thursday afternoon 1B went for a walk around the local area.

We were looking out for signs, road markings and features of the area. It was great exercise and we were lucky the weather stayed dry!

It gives a very different perspective walking around the area rather than driving past in a car. What did your son notice?

A Visit to Mr Fairclough

On Wednesday afternoon Year 1 paid Mr Fairclough a visit. He teaches History in the seniors.

In line with our topic work he talked to the boys about what school was like 100 years ago! It was certainly different and the boys decided on the whole that they would rather be at school today!

Ask your son about what he found out.

A Bird’s Eye View of Lochinver!

We used our knowledge from our walk to create a birds eye view map of our school grounds.

We had to work as a team to cut, stick and write as we represented the school buildings.

It was good fun and really got Mrs Alton and Mrs Fort thinking hard!

Barnaby Bear explores Lochinver!

This week 1B took Barnaby Bear on an adventure around our school grounds!

We looked at all the different buildings and thought about their uses.

We even popped in to Mr Walker’s office to have a look and say hello!

We then made a birds eye view map of the school grounds. It’s trickier than it sounds!
