Victorian Day

The boys had a wonderful Victorian Day. They looked fantastic in their Victorian outfits!

The day started with a visit from the Hertford museum. Miss Marychurch introduced them to toys from the past. The boys loved playing with the toys, and exploring what materials they were made from drawing comparisons from the past to present day.

The boys then went to the senior building for a History lesson with Mr Fairclough. He checked all their hands were clean before entering the classroom! The boys started the lesson by singing the national anthem, the way any Victorian class would begin. He then taught them how to write using the Victorian script, and the boys got a chance to look at the method of using feathers and ink for writing.

Sir spoke about the strict rules during Victorian times and showed examples. Children had to stand with their backs straight if they didn’t a wooden board was placed behind their back, the children had to try not to drop the board onto the floor. Miss Fletcher was tapping her fingers so she had to place wooden finger plates onto her fingers to identify she was the person who could not keep her fingers still.

English

This week we begun our new literacy topic which is fairy tales. Each week we will base our writing around a different story. This week we read ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’. The boys wrote sorry letters to Baby Bear, and ways they would make it up to baby for breaking his things. We also used our adjectives to create a ‘Wanted Poster’ to help the three bears find Goldilocks.

Maths

This week in maths we have been focusing on subtraction. Next week we will be moving onto solving word problems using subtraction.

Science

The boys are learning about forces. They know a force makes something move. Ask them to explain what the word position and motion means? You can go around your house and do different activities and the boys can explain was a push/pull force used and did it cause the object to start or stop.

Art

In art this week the boys used junk modeling to create a moving toy. Next week we will move onto our History topic about ‘The Past’ and study types of toys the children would play with during the Victorian times.

Religious Studies

In Religious Studies we looked at Remembrance day, and why people wear the poppy at this time of year. We went to a whole school assembly this morning for the two minutes silence at 11 O’Clock. The children used their fine motor skills to create a intricate reef and a poppy.

Have a lovely weekend,

Remembrance Day

We have been learning about the importance of Remembrance Day and of the many sacrifices that men and women made in the various wars.  This Friday we will be attending the special service of Remembrance with the Senior School.  Why not write a simple poem about Remembrance?

Here is a very famous war poem:

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning,

We will remember them.

Who do you think the poet is referring to?

From Mrs Turk
